You don’t have to be Edward Snowden to know that you need the protection of your personal data. The software that we focus on covers everything from secure Internet browsing to encrypting and hiding important files.
The Tor Browser
The Tor browser is designed to provide anonymous web browsing. Everything you watch is encrypted and sent over the Tor network. This means that websites will not see your IP address and ISPs will not be able to see which site you have visited. Everything you’ve viewed and all the data can be automatically deleted when you exit the browser.
CyberGhost is an excellent free VPN tool that redirects your internet traffic to hide your location and identity. The software has six elements: anonymous browsing, unblocking streaming sites, protecting your internet connection, anonymous torrent activity, unblocking websites and choosing a VPN server. The free version is supported by ads and runs much slower than the paid version.
Internet browsing does not go unnoticed. The data traffic, the sites you visit, the operating system you use, the version and type of browser, your IP address, preferences and some settings are just some of the information that the sites can get for you. The Ghostery plugin for Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari browsers aims to block the various tracking systems that try to track you on the Internet. Ghostery also shows you the scripts that watch you browse. You can monitor the status in a small window in the upper right corner of your screen.
KeyScrambler Personal is a small application (less than 1.5MB) that aims to encrypt every letter you type in a web browser to protect you from keyloggers. The free version supports 38 different browsers (excluding Microsoft Edge), but for other types of applications such as email, instant messaging and online games, you will need to upgrade to the paid version.
GnuPG is a tool for encrypting files and emails. It allows you to encrypt data and sign documents with a digital signature, using efficient technology to ensure user security. Although GnuPG is a command line client, there are dozens of programs that use it as an encryption environment, such as Claws Mail and Kleopatra.
Wise Folder Hider
With Wise Folder Hider you can hide files on your computer. The free version allows you to hide files and folders (both locally and on USB devices) and password protect them, but to encrypt them you will need to upgrade to the Pro version.
